Additional Information: This is one of the classic long distance race cocktail formulas that we at WMS have used for years in long-distance triathlons and adventure races. By itself, Met Endurance makes a great pre-race meal (that's its original purpose). For shorter workouts or races where serious fuel is not needed, just a bottle of Cytomax works great during the workout. For those mid-range races and workouts (1-2.5 hours), adding some Carbo Plus to the bottle of Cytomax gives you an extra energy boost, similar to that of a gel. One scoop of Cytomax and one scoop of Carbo Plus will give you approximately 200 calories, the equivalent of two gels.
Depending on your personal caloric needs and the length of the workout or race, you can adjust the servings. But for those of you who race and/or work out for periods that extend beyond three hours, the full cocktail just may be your energy ticket. In long course triathlons, ultra-distance runs, and adventure races, a competitor will need anywhere from 250 to 750 calories per hour to sustain energy.
We love energy bars and gels, but if you have ever tried eating 14 bars and gels during a race, you know exactly why this cocktail exists. Two scoops each of Met Endurance, Cytomax, and Carbo Plus in a large water bottle will give you around 600 calories. Make sure you blend it (the Met Endurance tastes much better blended), and include ice if it will be hot or you plan on consuming the bottle later in the day/night. We find that a 600 calorie bottle has a nice, smooth, non-thick consistency, but we've seen people put over a 1,000 calories in a single bottle. But don't experiment on race day. Practice your nutrition plan in training!
