However his true love his coaching. He first started coaching in the mid 1990’s at his community running club on a volunteer basis. At the same time he was a Police Officer in Queensland, Australia For 5 years  as part of his 13 year career as a Police Officer he was a Physical Education Instructor at the Police Academy teaching Police Recruits on a daily basis.

After leaving the Police Service in 2003 to follow his passion of coaching he built and developed his own swim school teaching everyone from babies to adults how to swim as well as having a junior squad program. This swim school is still operating to this day having taught thousands of children the life saving skills of swimming.

Mark continued to coach runners of all abilities from juniors through to elite level national athletes in addition to swimming while competing as a triathlete.  In 2007 he started his own triathlon squad in Brisbane with one athlete whish he developed and built that squad into one of Australia’s largest and most successful triathlon squads, Tri Nation triathlon.

In the 12 years Mark owned and operated Tri Nation triathlon Mark coached everyone from raw beginners, junior athletes, age group athletes and elite paratriathlon and  professional long course athletes.  He was also a member of the Australian elite para triathlon coaching team from 2017-2019.

From 2019 -2020 Mark was the Head Coach for Triathlon Scotland.  In that position he coached Scotland's best athletes as they competed across the World at the elite level . He worked on a daily basis with some of the best professionals across exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, nutrition,  sports psychology, sports medicine and fellow coaches through out the  Great Britian system.  Mark also had the opportunity to lead training camps through out Europe which allowed him to collaborate with other World class coaches.

To take up that position Mark sold Tri Nation triathlon so he could move with his young family to Scotland. Now having relocated to  New Plymouth, Mark wants to help local athletes  reach their potential.

Mark is one of the World’s most experienced triathlon coaches. Having coached swimming, running and triathlon for almost 30 years and athletes of all abilities he truly is an elite triathlon coach. This experience and expertise is now on offer to everyone in New Plymouth.

In addition to his coaching experience and successful business career, Mark has also held senior management positions in the Police Service, Corporate organisations and National Sporting bodies through out his professional career. Coaching is not just about swim, bike and run and Mark’s varied professional career gives him a great understanding of what people need from a coach.

I love to help the working class hero the Mums and Dads of the World find time to chase their first triathlon. I love to see them take an idea and turn it into completion.

By using simple easy to follow programmes and weekly tips help wedge exercise into life, making it fun and focused on establishing new habits they can stick to for life.

After 10 years racing at an elite level in ITU triathlon racing including two Olympic campaigns I am now a full time working solo Dad.

I have shared care of Madeleine and Joshua while I balance work as a builder, coaching and being the best Dad I can be for these two.

Every year I'm finding smarter, more effective ways to train for triathlons around a busy life. I like to use these skills to adapt the lifestyles of those athletes I coach.

I strive to make sure I build a group who supports each other on their journey to their first triathlon or even Ironman race for the long term here in Taupo.

I'm keen to build regional communities passionate about triathlon. Getting these Mums and Dads excited about what they learn from me and sharing that with their kids and friends for many years to come.

Health is your wealth, so education in how to create consistent exercise habits and good healthy eating to get those to stick to these habits even when triathlon isn't a priority, they are sticking to a philosophy of being healthy, fit and strong for life.
